Flow Resistance Lab

Change the shape, speed, and medium, then watch pressure, drag, and wake patterns form around the body.

FLOW RESISTANCE LAB

Change the shape, speed, and medium, then read the pressure ridge, drag proxy, and downstream wake.
RUNNING
First observationDrag the body, switch shapes, or choose Draw and sketch your own rough obstacle in the flow.

SYSTEM NOTE

Resistance becomes visible where the stream has to make a choice.

This LAB is a visual approximation of flow around a body. It is not an engineering CFD solver, wind-tunnel measurement, or aerodynamic design tool.

OBSERVATION POINTS

Shape, speed, medium, wake.

  • LBM Flow uses a lightweight browser grid; Visual gives a quicker particle-field comparison.
  • Circle, Plate, Streamline, Wing, and Draw make the same stream split, slow, and rejoin differently.
  • Air, Water, and Viscous change how pressure, tracer trails, and wake bubbles read on the canvas.
  • This differs from Vortex Flow Mixer: the subject is body resistance and wake formation, not free vortex centers.

SYSTEM NOTE

v(x,y) is a browser velocity field around a body mask. omega = partial v_y / partial x - partial v_x / partial y hints at wake rotation, delta p = p_front - p_wake reads pressure difference, and dx/dt = v(x,y) moves tracer particles. Drag and wake energy are visual proxies, not engineering CFD values.

OBSERVATION GUIDE

Touchpoints for Observation

Observe a flow splitting around a body, slowing near the pressure ridge, and leaving a wake whose shape depends on speed, medium, angle, and body form.

  • Use LBM Flow and Visual, compare Circle, Plate, Streamline, Wing, and Draw, change Air/Water/Viscous media, drag or draw a body, and tune speed, size, angle, and wake gain.
  • A lower resistance index is not always the same as a quiet wake; compare pressure delta and wake energy together.
  • It sits near Flow Field Painter and Vortex Flow Mixer, but the subject is body resistance, pressure buildup, and downstream wake formation.

This is a visual approximation for observing drag, pressure, and wake behavior. It is not an engineering CFD solver, wind-tunnel measurement, or aerodynamic design tool.
